700 cases of diarrhea reported in Tonj North

AWEIL – A severe outbreak of diarrhea has hit Tonj North County in Warrap state of South Sudan with around 700 cases reported between October and November 2025, according to health official.

Angelo Deec Chol, a health director in Tonj North County, told Sudans Post on Saturday that the report showed the country is on high alert due to a rise in cases of watery diarrhea reported between October and November 2025.

“WE have recorded 700 cases of diarrhea cases more specially among the under five children and the cases are so sporadic in some other health centers as well,” Chol said.

Chol reported that the cases were documented from the two primary health facilities, Rum-abuth and Abuuth Ngok health centers, which accounted for a significant number of the cases.

“It is of utmost importance to adhere to the health methods such as washing hands once one has visited the latrine and avoid open defecation as it can lead to the outbreak of the cholera.”

He attributed the rise in diarrhea cases among children with open defecation, warning that if the problem is not tackled, it could have serious consequences, particularly if actions such as constructing pit latrines are not undertaken.

He called upon members of the public to join hands in fighting the diarrhea outbreak by maintaining high hygiene by drinking treated water and eating well-cooked food.

“We are calling for massive awareness to be done in all the areas in and around greater Tonj to curb the rise of diarrhea,” he said.

He urged health authorities and partners in the state and region to provide funding for health facilities in the state to help tackle health issues.

He urged residents to reports to the nearest health facility if they identify a person presenting with acute watery diarrhea and severe dehydration.

Diarrhea is the medical term for passing loose, watery stools at least three times a day.

Symptoms may include abdominal cramps, bloating, nausea, vomiting, and a pressing need to defecate.
