Stellies Secure Late Comeback Win At Orbit

Stellenbosch FC ended a three-game losing run in the Betway Premiership with a late 2-1 victory over Orbit College on Wednesday evening.

Steve Barker’s charges got the winning feeling over the weekend after defeating AS Otoho in the CAF Confederation Cup, but they played the clash in Polokwane as none of the stadiums in Cape Town were available.

In the league, Stellenbosch have lost their last three encounters while Orbit were thumped 4-1 before the international break

The away side carved out a big opening in the first 15 minutes through Devin Titus, who saw his close-range striker brilliantly palmed away by Orbit goalkeeper Sekhoane Moerane.

It was one-way traffic in the first period, with Stellenbosch showing a lot attacking intent in an attempt end their winless streak in the league but the clear-cut chances were hard to come by.

The hosts, however, took the lead just before the halftime break as Monnapule Saleng’s surging run set up Mbulelo Wagaba, who cut inside before firing into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Saleng continued to be a threat after the interval as the Orlando Pirates loanee tried his luck from a dead-ball situation, but ended up striking his effort against the far post.

With time beginning to run out, Stellenbosch should have levelled matters on 70 minutes when full-back Turan Manafov turned provider to pick out Muzomuhle Khanyi with a delightful cross, but the young striker sent his header over the crossbar.

Stellenbosch’s hopes securing a comeback took a big blow on 79 minutes when they were reduced to ten men after Thabo Moloisane picked up his second yellow card on the night.

However, Stellies managed to pull themselves level in the 88th minute when substitute Thato Khiba found the back of the net with a superb first-time volley that sailed through sea of bodies.

There was enough time for Stellenbosch to complete the turnaround in second-half stoppage time when Moerane dropped the ball from a corner, which allowed Athenkosi Mcaba to pounce and volley home the winning goal.
