With Orlando Pirates defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi reportedly set to join Chicago Fire, Soccer Laduma highlights the top five most valuable players at the Major League Soccer outfit.
Andre Franco – €2,5 million (R50 m)
Franco, a Portuguese attacking midfielder, is on loan from Porto and is tied on the same valuation with four other players. From a South African perspective, Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Nuno Santos is also valued at R50 million, the highest at Sundowns, with the likes of Iqraam Rayners, Teboho Mokoena and Marcelo Allende not far behind in comparison.
Philip Zinckernagel – €3 million (R60m)
A Danish winger, Zinckernagel, boasts some experience, having played for teams such as Watford, Nottingham Forest, Olympiakos, Standard Liege and Club Brugge.
The 30-year-old has scored 16 goals in 36 matches this season.
Jonathan Bamba – €3,5 million (R69,5m)
Bamba joined Chicago from Spanish LaLiga side Celta Vigo in the 2023/24 season on a free transfer and is an international of Ivory Coast.
The 29-year-old is a former France junior international, with significant experience from Ligue 1, having turned out for Saint-Etienne, Angers and Lille.
Brian Gutierrez – €5 million (R99m)
Gutierrez, at 22, is tipped for a bigger future, having come through the academy ranks at Chicago.
The American midfielder has played for the junior national teams and is part of the United States senior side, boasting 11 goals and four assists for his club in 35 matches in the current campaign.
Hugo Cuypers – €9 million ( R179m)
Cuypers is one of the most expensive signings in the history of Chicago, after he was acquired for €11m (R218m) from Belgian club KAA Gent in February 2024.
The Belgian striker has lived up to his billing, with 21 goals in 39 games for the American outfit this season.
