De Jong’s Stellies Farewell All But Confirmed

Andre de Jong celebrates after scoring a goal during the CAF Confederation Cup, Second Qualifying Round match between Stellenbosch FC and 15 de Agosto

Andre de Jong’s time at Stellenbosch FC appears to be drawing to a close, with a close source indicating that the New Zealand international has already played his final game for the club – and that a move to Orlando Pirates is all but in place ahead of the January transfer window.

This development follows Soccer Laduma’s report earlier this week suggesting that De Jong’s future at Stellies had become increasingly uncertain, with indications that Pirates were preparing to revive their long-standing interest in the forward after two previously unsuccessful attempts.

Now, a source close to the situation has provided further clarity, confirming that Wednesday night’s 2-1 defeat to Polokwane City at Athlone Stadium was “very likely his last appearance” in Stellies colours.

“Wednesday night was his very last game for the club. There were plans to officially announce his departure during the game as a player who has contributed over 114 appearances for the club. But after the team conceded the second goal it was decided that announcing such news wouldn’t be a good idea for the fans who were already disappointed about the results,” said the source.

“He has actually decided to leave. That was after being approached by Orlando Pirates. He signed a deal with Pirates… he was supposed to have left during the last transfer window, but there were fears and some technicalities regarding his work permit, so Stellies couldn’t release him until the next window. But now, he requested to leave. In fact, Pirates requested to have him,” the source said.

While no formal word has yet come from either club, the latest information supports the growing belief that De Jong will complete his switch to the Soweto giants when the transfer window reopens on 1 January.

As previously reported, Pirates have tracked De Jong throughout the year, attempting to secure his signature in September.

If confirmed, De Jong’s departure would mark the end of a highly productive spell in the Cape Winelands.

Since arriving at the club in January 2023, the 29-year-old has amassed over 100 appearances, with over 30 goal contributions, helping Stellies lift the Carling Knockout in 2023 and reach the CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals last season.

His influence, versatility and experience have been central to the team’s rise under Steve Barker.

Although all signs point toward an imminent exit, both clubs are yet to issue any official confirmation.

However, with personal terms understood to have been agreed and the January window approaching, it increasingly appears that De Jong’s next chapter will be in the black and white of Pirates.
