Rassie Erasmus Signs New Four-Year Extension as Springbok Coach

South African Rugby (SA Rugby) has confirmed that Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus will remain at the helm for another four years, extending his contract through to 2031.

The announcement, made on Friday during SA Rugby’s general meeting of member unions, means Erasmus will oversee the team beyond the 2031 Rugby World Cup in the United States.

Praise for Leadership and Success

SA Rugby President Mark Alexander lauded Erasmus for his extraordinary record, highlighting the coach’s role in shaping the identity and style of South African rugby.

Under his leadership, the Springboks have achieved historic milestones. Rassie has refined a style of play that combines physicality, tactical intelligence, and resilience, ensuring South African rugby remains both distinctive and formidable,” Alexander said.

A Record of Historic Achievements

Erasmus, a former Springbok captain, was first appointed as Director of Rugby in 2018. Since then, he has led South Africa to two consecutive Rugby World Cup victories in 2019 and 2023.

After being appointed Springbok head coach in 2024, Erasmus guided the team to back-to-back Castle Lager Rugby Championship titles and maintained South Africa’s position as the top-ranked team globally over the last three seasons.

Erasmus Reflects on the Extension

Speaking about his extended tenure, Erasmus said the decision was “a quick and easy conversation to reach agreement.”

“I have always said that I would find it hard to coach any other international team, and I’m very happy to continue as long as the South African public wants me,” he added.

“Although this is a long-term agreement, we are focused on the tough 2026 schedule ahead.”

Continuity and Future Plans

Alexander emphasized that the contract extension secures continuity in leadership, supporting the long-term development of player pathways, technical systems, and competitive ambitions.

“This extension is a vote of confidence in Rassie’s proven ability to deliver results, refine our strategy, and inspire future generations,” Alexander said.

He confirmed that announcements regarding the rest of the Springbok coaching team would follow in due course.
