Jayden Adams’ future at Mamelodi Sundowns revealed
Mamelodi Sundowns are understood to be standing firm on the future of Jayden Adams, with indications that the club has no intention of loaning out the midfielder despite his reduced involvement this season.
The 23-year-old has found regular game time hard to come by in a highly competitive Sundowns squad and was recently left out of Bafana Bafana’s Africa Cup of Nations squad for the tournament in Morocco. However, Siya sources have revealed that both the club’s management and technical team remain confident in Adams’ ability and want him to fight for his place rather than seek opportunities elsewhere on loan.
An insider close to the player told Soccer Laduma that the message from Chloorkop has been clear: Adams is still viewed as part of the club’s plans, but he is also expected to raise his levels and seize his opportunities when they arise.
“He is staying, they believe he still has a role to play. They won’t consider loaning him. So you’ve got to understand that if someone gets injured tomorrow then it’s a very different because the picture becomes very different and he will have to play. But yeah Jayden needs to also just pull up his socks,” the insider observed.
Adams, who joined Sundowns from Stellenbosch FC with a growing reputation as one of the country’s most promising midfielders, was part of the Bafana Bafana side that finished third at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast. He has since earned three senior international caps, scoring once for the national team.
This season, the midfielder has made 15 appearances across all competitions for the Brazilians, registering a single goal. However, increased competition following the arrival of Nuno Santos, coupled with the resurgence in form of Sphelele Mkhulise, has seen Adams slip down the pecking order at club level — a situation that has also impacted his standing in the national team setup.
Despite the challenges, Sundowns’ stance suggests a continued belief in Adams’ long-term value. With the club competing on multiple fronts, opportunities could yet arise, and the onus will be on the young midfielder to respond and reassert himself in one of the deepest squads in South African football.
