Gonzalo Garcia continued to lead the attack for Los Blancos as Kylian Mbappe was only named on the bench while Barcelona coach Hansi Flick recalled Robert Lewandowski and Lamine Yamal following their semi-final win over Athletic Bilbao.

The Catalan giants dominated possession in the early stages of the encounter and they went close to pulling ahead on 15 minutes when Eric Garcia was allowed to meet a corner kick, but the defender sent his header inches wide of the upright, with Madrid breathing a sigh of relief.

Madrid, meanwhile, struggled to carve out any big openings in the final third whenever they did manage to get some possession, with the likes of Vinicius and Jude Bellingham cutting frustrating figures while Barcelona dominated the ball for most of the first period.

The game sprung into life in the final ten minutes before the halftime break as Raphinha carved out some space on the edge of the box before rifling the ball into the back of the net to put Barcelona ahead, before Vinicius Junior brought Madrid level with a lovely individual effort his own in the 47th minute.

The madness was not done there as Barcelona restored their lead four minutes later when Pedri played in Lewandowski, who scored with a delightful chip, however Los Blancos hit back straight away through Garcia’s close-range strike to make it 2-2 before the interval.

The second half continued in similar fashion to the first as Vinicius went close to giving Madrid the lead ten minutes with another solo effort but Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia pulled off a superb save to deny the Brazilian his second goal of the night.

However, Barcelona took the lead for a third time on 73 minutes as substitute Dani Olmo made the perfect impact five minutes after his arrival as he unleashed a shot from the edge of the box which took a deflection and sailed past Thibaut Courtois.

The Catalan giants did finish the game with ten players after Frenkie De Jong was given his marching orders in second-half stoppage time, however the sending off did not deter Barcelona from their objective as they saw out the remaining stages and secured their Super Cup title.
