KUAJOK – Police in Wunrok Payam in Twic County of South Sudan’s Warrap State have detained a 25-year-old man in connection with the death of a 24-year-old man following a violent altercation at a local drinking spot.

Inspector of Police in Wunrok, Atem Deng Atem, confirmed the incident on Thursday evening, saying the suspect—identified as Bol Garang—is being held for allegedly inflicting a fatal injury on the victim, Majak Mawien Aguek.

The two men were reportedly drinking together at a local pub before a quarrel broke out, escalating into a physical fight.

According to Inspector Deng, the victim sustained a serious neck injury during the fight. He was rushed to Mayen-Abun Hospital for urgent medical attention, but died on the way before reaching the facility.

“What happened is that Majak Mawien Aguek quarreled a local pub with a suspect called Bol. When they fought, Majak sustained a neck injury. He was rushed to Mayen-Abun Hospital but died before reaching the hospital. We are currently holding the suspect who fought with him,” Deng explained.

Police have launched investigations into the incident, after which the suspect will be arraigned before the court. Inspector Deng used the incident to caution residents against resorting to violence when disputes arise.

“It is imperative for our people to abide by the rule of law. Taking the life of another person is dangerous, and the law will take its course,” he urged, encouraging community members to seek redress through local courts or police channels instead of taking matters into their own hands.

In a separate incident in the same state, authorities in Gogrial East County reported the recovery of the body of an elderly woman who drowned in a water pool locally known as a hafir in Luony-Aker Payam earlier this week.

Thiik Agoth Giir, a local official, said the woman was allegedly heavily intoxicated before the incident. She reportedly lost her way while returning home and later fell into the hafir, where her body was discovered.

Authorities have since issued renewed warnings about excessive alcohol consumption, urging residents to exercise restraint and remain cautious, particularly in areas with open water reservoirs and poor lighting.

Both incidents have raised fresh concerns among local leaders and law enforcement over alcohol-related violence and accidents, prompting calls for stronger community awareness and adherence to public safety measures.
