The arrival of a new head coach at Mamelodi Sundowns could disrupt the foreign contingent, as PSL regulations would force the club to offload one player in order to register new signing Brayan León.

Sundowns are reportedly in talks with former coach Pitso Mosimane, with local media suggesting the parties are at an advanced stage of a potential reunion.

Current head coach Miguel Cardoso has faced growing dissatisfaction from sections of the Mamelodi Sundowns fanbase, with the Tshwane giants understood to be exploring replacement options ahead of the Betway Premiership’s second-round resumption.

Mamelodi Sundowns spared no effort to sign León from Independiente Medellín, a move that made the 25-year-old the club’s sixth registered foreign player.

With Matías Esquivel returning to his parent club after his loan at Greek side A.E. Kifisia was cut short, the Chloorkop-based club reached the PSL limit of five registered foreign players, including Marcelo Allende, Arthur Sales, Miguel Reisinho and Nuno Santos.

Sundowns have yet to decide on Esquivel’s future, with their foreign-quota dilemma likely to be resolved if the Argentine is loaned out again, allowing the club to register new signing, León.

However, the situation could change if Sundowns part ways with Cardoso, as a new head coach — potentially Mosimane — may want to assess Esquivel before the club decides which foreign player should make way to comply with the five-player registration limit.

Sundowns have previously terminated the contracts of players like Pavol Safranko and Ricardo Nascimento to free up foreign-player slots, particularly following high-profile signings.
