‘We Going to Win This Cup’: Gayton McKenzie Declares During FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour

South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, has boldly declared that Bafana Bafana are destined for World Cup glory, saying the arrival of the FIFA World Cup Trophy in Cape Town is more than ceremonial — it is a sign of what’s to come.

The iconic trophy made a high-profile appearance at the V&A Waterfront on Sunday, February 1, as part of its global tour ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be hosted in North America.

According to IOL, McKenzie said that he believes the World Cup trophy’s visit to South Africa carries symbolic meaning, insisting it is already “scouting” where it will reside after the tournament. He proudly remarked that South Africa is going to win the FIFA World Cup.

When you are going to move into a place, the first thing you do is go and check out everything, so the Cup is here to come and check out where it is going to stay for the next four years, bra, we going to win this Cup, I am telling you. People can call me mad, people can call me crazy, we going to win this Cup. This Bafana Bafana are calculated, they know what they doing, these guys have got more than 20 games without a loss, this is a serious team,” he said.

According to the minister, the national team’s recent form justifies his confidence, pointing to an extended unbeaten run and what he described as a mature, calculated squad that understands what is required at the highest level.

He dismissed critics of his optimism, saying bold belief is necessary if the country is to reclaim its place among football’s elite.

Confidence Fuelled by Bafana’s Form

McKenzie highlighted Bafana Bafana’s impressive consistency, noting that the team has gone more than 20 matches without defeat — a run he believes reflects tactical discipline and growing mental strength.

He described the current squad as focused and deliberate in its approach, suggesting the foundation for a serious World Cup challenge is already in place.

Big Plans to Take South African Fans to the World Cup

Beyond the pitch, McKenzie outlined ambitious plans to ensure South African supporters are visible and vocal in North America during the tournament.

McKenzie revealed that fan parks and nationwide competitions will form part of a broader supporter engagement drive. He explained that one initiative will see 50 winners selected through a “Face of Africa” competition to attend the tournament, alongside contests celebrating dance, food, and other cultural expressions.

Let me tell you there’s going to be fan parks, there’s going to be competitions. “We even running a competition where 50 of the ‘Face of Africa’ can go to the World Cup. So people, you must put your face there, even if it’s a guy or woman … Our women here are more beautiful than those women (overseas), that is a fact. We going to have competitions of people that can dance, people that can make food. “We are taking artists, dancers, podcasters, so that everybody can get the feel of what’s happening…”Minister McKenzie asserted.
