Coach Gavin Hunt rang the changes after the midweek win over Kaizer Chiefs on Wednesday, as Ibraheem Jabaar and Wayde Jooste were the only players retained from the Nedbank Cup win, with the likes of Ashley Cupido, Genino Palace, Omega Mdaka, and Khomotjo Lekoloane recalled.

The Cape Winelands side’s campaign was hanging in the balance after back-to-back losses to CR Belouizdad saw them slip to the bottom of the group, meaning only a win or a draw would keep them in contention for a spot in the knockout stage.

However, Stellenbosch’s situation did not improve in the first half when Otoho broke the deadlock seven minutes before the halftime break thanks to a strike from Exauce Sagesse Nzaou after being set up by Prince Mouandza Mapata

The lead was doubled on the stroke of halftime as Klegnime Kone bagged his first goal in the group stage phase by firing past goalkeeper Oscarine Masuluke.

Hunt responded by making a quadruple change at the start of the second half by throwing on Kabomelo Kodisang, Mthetheli Mthiyane, Chumani Butsaka and Langelihle Phili, with Khanyi, Jooste, Lekoloane and Palace making in defence and midfield.

The changes certainly injected some freshness into the side, who nearly pulled a goal back in the opening ten minutes as Omega Mdaka unleashed a powerful strike that crashed against the crossbar.

As a result, Stellenbosch can no longer qualify for the knockout stage while Otoho have moved to the top of the group.
