Western Equatoria hikes fuel prices, warns against overcharging

YAMBIO – The Governor of Western Equatoria State, Daniel Badagbu Rimbasa, has approved a regulated fuel price adjustment following a consultative meeting with fuel station owners in Yambio.

The meeting, chaired by the Governor and attended by state ministers and members of the business community, resolved to adjust the price of fuel from SSP 8,500 to SSP 9,500 per litre — reflecting an increase of SSP 1,000.

The decision comes after traders raised concerns over rising fuel prices in Juba and neighbouring countries, citing increased transportation and operational costs linked to global economic pressures.

Speaking on behalf of the state government on Tuesday, the Minister of Trade and Industry, Haim Izaya Paul, said the Governor and his cabinet carefully considered the concerns of traders while prioritising the welfare of citizens.

“We are aware of the global situation affecting fuel supply and prices. However, under the leadership of His Excellency the Governor, the government resolved to limit the increment to SSP 1,000 only, to protect the public from excessive charges,” the Minister stated.

The Acting Chairperson of the Western Equatoria State Chamber of Commerce, Salah Anthony, welcomed the government’s intervention, noting that the business community agreed to compromise to prevent fuel shortages in the state.

Governor Rimbasa issued strict directives to all petrol station owners to comply fully with the agreed price of SSP 9,500 per litre.

He warned that any station found charging beyond the approved rate will face legal action.

The Governor emphasised that the adjustment was made in good faith to strike a balance between sustaining fuel supply and safeguarding citizens from exploitation.

The State Government reaffirmed its commitment to continuous market monitoring and working collaboratively with the business community to ensure stability and protect residents from unfair pricing practices.
