McCarthy has been with the Harambee Stars since March last year and has recorded six wins, six defeats, and three draws in 15 games.
His next big task will be the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Kenya will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania.
While he has enjoyed his experience working as a national team coach, the former Bafana Bafana international admitted he misses the day-to-day rush of working with a club side, he revealed on Marawa Sport WorldWide on 947.
“As I said, this experience in Kenya has been unbelievable. It’s been remarkable and nice, but I think I’m still too young to go so long without being active. I’m an everyday, on the training pitch [kind of guy]. I want to improve players,” said McCarthy.
“I want to give more, and I feel that it is holding me back from doing that because you don’t have enough time with players, like I’ve not seen them in three months. When I see them, I’m only going to have a week to do what I can with them,” the 48-year-old continued.

“I think when I get to Hugo Broos’ age, then I want to go back into the national team, but after this experience with Kenya, I’m really looking to get back into managing a club,” the former AmaZulu FC coach added.
