South African Proteas finally depart India

The International Cricket Council (ICC) acknowledged travel delays after the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Players and support staff have struggled to leave India after their campaigns ended. The ICC blamed major disruptions to international air travel.

The ongoing crisis in the Gulf region caused the problems. Consequently, airlines changed routes, cancelled flights and delayed departures. As a result, several teams could not travel home immediately.

South Africa and West Indies Begin Departures

However, the ICC confirmed progress with travel arrangements. Four South Africa players and five family members have already boarded flights home. Meanwhile, the remaining 29 members will depart within 24 hours. The Proteas played their final T20 World Cup match on Wednesday, 4 March.

At the same time, the West Indies team has started travelling home. Nine members are already flying to the Caribbean. The remaining 16 will leave India within the next 24 hours.

“The delay is the direct result of the ongoing crisis across the Gulf region, which has caused widespread and continuing disruption to international air travel,” the ICC said.

ICC Prioritises Safety During Travel Arrangements

The ICC emphasised that safety remains the top priority. Officials also rejected speculation about favouring certain teams.

“There is no link between arrangements made in the cases of South Africa and the West Indies and those made previously for England or any other nation,” the ICC said.

The organisation continues working with airlines and airport authorities. Government stakeholders are also assisting with travel planning. Many players are travelling with spouses and young children.

Therefore, teams will only depart once safe travel routes are confirmed. The ICC said it will continue monitoring the situation. Further updates will follow once additional travel arrangements are finalised.
