After Kaizer Chiefs qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup group stages for the first time, Soccer Laduma reveals the procedure and permutations ahead of the draw, with Stellenbosch also through.

Chiefs progressed to the group stages after a 3-1 win over AS Simba in the second preliminary round, second-leg at Dobsonville Stadium and went through by the same margin on aggregate, after a goalless draw in the first-leg in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

First-half goals by Etoisa Ighodaro, Zitha Kwinika and Makabi Lilepo were enough to secure passage into the group phase, with an own goal by Aden McCarthy late in the game proving to be a consolation for Simba.

Attention now shifts to the group stage draw on 3 November in Johannesburg, SuperSport studios, with big sides such as Wydad Casablanca, Zamalek, Zesco United, AS Vita Club and CR Belouizdad also qualified, among 16 teams.

According to CAF regulations regarding the draw procedure, the top four teams, based on the rankings will be seeded in Port 1 and will avoid each other, with each side spreading into each of the four groups.

The rankings are determined on a five-year cycle, graded on matches in the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup.

Based on the rankings released by CAF in August, the four top sides, Zamalek (7th), Wydad (8th), USM Alger (9th) and Belouizdad (10th) will be seeded and will avoid each other.

Teams will be entered into Port 2, Port 3 and Port 4 according to their rankings, with the lowest ranked sides going to Port 4.

Chiefs will certainly not be seeded among the big guns and are likely to be put in Port 4 of the lowest ranked teams, as they were rated number 50 by CAF two months ago, which means they potentially face a tough draw, as they will face either one of the highly-ranked teams in Port 1.

Stellenbosch, ranked 21st on the continent, will most likely be in Port 2 and they could face Amakhosi, should they not be in the same pot, as CAF regulations only states that “a national association cannot have more than two teams from it’s country in the same group”.

Other teams in the draw includes Maniema Union, Al Masry, Azam, Singida Black Stars, San Pedro, OC Safi, Nairobi United, AS Otogo and Djoliba.
