Rumbek woman injured in gunfire between armed youth, security forces

The State’s Acting Minister of Information and Communication, William Koji, said the Tuesday night shooting erupted when a group of armed youth attempted to pass through the town, an act prohibited by authorities.

“The movement of armed youth through the town is not allowed. These individuals came in large numbers, posing a serious threat to public safety,” Koji said.

He explained that the gunfire broke out as the armed youth tried to scatter after encountering security patrols. “We don’t know whether they were planning a revenge attack or a cattle raid, but such movements are strictly prohibited,” he added.

Koji confirmed that only one person — a woman — was injured by stray bullets during the incident. “She was caught in the crossfire at midnight when the security forces were on patrol. The culprits will be tracked down and arrested, and their firearms confiscated,” he said.

Dr. Teran Madit Teran, Director of Rumbek State Hospital, confirmed receiving one gunshot casualty that night.

“Around midnight, a woman was brought in after being accidentally shot during the exchange of fire between armed youth and organized forces conducting a disarmament operation,” Teran said. “She sustained moderate injuries to her back but is now stable and recovering at Rumbek State Hospital.”

Daniel Laat Kon, a civil society activist in Lakes State, also confirmed reports of sporadic gunfire in Rumbek’s Makoi residential area, which left residents frightened.

“The shooting lasted for over an hour. While we support the government’s efforts to pursue criminals, security operations should not cause panic among civilians,” Laat said.

He condemned the continued presence of armed youth in towns and nearby villages. “Our young people must stop moving with firearms. The government should intensify efforts to disarm and control illegal weapons to prevent such incidents,” he added.
