Minister promises aircraft for Egyptian fans
With their side progressing to the quarter-final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, an African minister has promised an aircraft for supporters should their side reach the final.
Egypt’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign continues to build momentum after the Pharaohs topped Group B before sealing their place in the quarter-finals with a convincing 3-1 win over Benin in the Round of 16.
The seven-time champions will now lock horns with Ivory Coast in a blockbuster quarter-final encounter on Saturday.
While Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has recently attempted to manage expectations by suggesting Egypt are not favourites for the title, confidence back home tells a different story.
There is growing belief that the national team has the pedigree and momentum to reach the final and challenge for continental honours.
That optimism has been reinforced by Egypt’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr Ashraf Sobhy, who made a significant pledge following the team’s latest victory in Agadir.
Speaking to Al-Masry Al-Youm, Sobhy revealed that aircraft would be arranged to fly Egyptian supporters to Morocco should the Pharaohs advance to the AFCON final.
Following the Benin triumph at Adrar Stadium, the Egyptian camp was buoyed by renewed belief and focus as attention swiftly turned to the challenges ahead.
Sobhy confirmed that he has already held talks with Egypt’s ambassador to Morocco, Ahmed Nihad Abdel Latif, to explore the procurement of match tickets, which could be made available to Moroccan fans in a show of solidarity and support for the Pharaohs.
According to Sobhy, the atmosphere in the stands has been a clear reflection of the strong and longstanding ties between the two nations.
“We are proud of our national team and tell them to give it their all,” he said. “There is tremendous support for sport, Egyptian football and the national team, and we hope to reach the final against Morocco.”
