Across Africa, a new generation of innovators is reshaping how communities access health care, energy, and essential services. This week, the inaugural One World Sustainability Awards from UNIDO placed a powerful spotlight on two standout organizations—Drop Access Limited and WeLight Africa—whose missions reflect the continent’s drive toward inclusive development, sustainable growth, and the scaling of homegrown solutions capable of transforming millions of lives.
For Drop Access Limited, the recognition comes at a pivotal moment. The company—renowned for its inventive last-mile cold-chain technologies supporting vaccine delivery and essential medical supplies—is leveraging this milestone to pursue global certification and continental expansion. “I want to use this opportunity to attain global compliance for our solution such as CE mark, WHO Certification, and scale in the whole of Africa as well as MENA regions,” the company’s leadership noted. With UNIDO’s backing, Drop Access is now seeking new investment and technical partnerships. “We are currently inviting partners and investors to join our ambition to impact 10 million lives by 2020.”
Their vision reflects a broader truth: Africa’s development challenges will be solved by innovators who understand local realities, adapt technology to remote environments, and are committed to building resilient systems. Drop Access exemplifies how African-designed solutions can strengthen public health outcomes, particularly in hard-to-reach communities where system gaps persist.
In the energy sector, WeLight Africa is delivering equally meaningful impact. Working across underserved regions, the organisation has become instrumental in providing affordable, reliable power to rural households and community institutions. The UNIDO award underscores the significance of their work. “We are deeply grateful to UNIDO for this award, which recognises the work carried out by our teams and partners, and its impact on nearly 800,000 people,” the leadership shared.
This recognition fuels a renewed commitment. “This reinforces our dedication to expanding access to electricity across Africa, where 600 million people still remain without power. The technology and the business model now exist to turn this electrification potential into reality, and we are determined to scale it with everyone’s support.”
As both organisations leverage their new visibility to secure partnerships, attract capital, and expand their reach, one message resonates clearly: Africa’s innovators are not waiting for global systems to shift—they are building new ones. With the right investment and collaboration, the coming decade could see millions more lives transformed by African ingenuity.
Launched to honour pioneers and entrepreneurs advancing inclusive, resilient, and climate-aligned industrial growth, the inaugural One World Sustainability Awards drew nearly 2,000 applications from 135 countries. The programme features four categories—Innovative Startups, Sustainable Supply Chains, Women in Industry, and Lifetime Achievement—each representing a critical pillar of a future-ready global economy.
