Bok Women’s Sevens ‘A’ Unbeaten on Day 1 at Dubai International Invitational

The Springbok Women’s Sevens ‘A’ made a good start at the International Invitational tournament, which is part of the Emirates Dubai 7s, winning both their pool matches on Friday.

In their first match of the day, the South Africans beat the LV Hammerheads by 12-10 before dismantling Sweden 20-0 in their second clash. They will face Poland and Ireland Invitational on Saturday.

It was a slow start against the Hammerheads, with an early yellow card to Leigh Fortuin not helping matters. Their opponents scored first, but then South Africa sprung into life, with a good try by Vianca Boer levelling matters just before halftime at 5-5.

A well-worked try by Shannon-Lee Windvogel, converted by Byrhandré Dolf, edged the SA side ahead and although the Hammerheads added another unconverted try, it was not enough to spoil the fun for coach Cecil Afrika and his squad.

The performance against Sweden was much more fluent, with Windvogel and wing Patience Mokone in particular very dangerous with ball in hand.

The synergy on defence was also much better by South Africa, who led 10-0 at the break following tries by Windvogel and Mokone.

The duo also scored in the second half, with Windvogel’s second effort, racing through on a 60m run.
