Cole Palmer was back in the Chelsea line-up after being rested for the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, as he joined Pedro Neto, Joao Pedro and Alejandro Garnacho in the attack.

The Magpies got off to the perfect star when Nick Woltemade opened the scoring after just four minutes after the start with a close-range finish after Robert Sanchez did well to save Anthony Gordon’s shot at the far post.

While the Blues struggled to carve out a big chance, Newcastle doubled their lead on 20 minutes as Woltemade completed his brace by turning home a well-weighted cross from Gordon.

It was a disappointing opening 45 minutes for the away side, who nearly conceded a third goal on the stroke of halftime through the same combination when Gordon’s cross found Woltemade, who steered his volley wide with only Sanchez to beat.

However, Chelsea made the perfect start to the second half when captain Reece James pulled one back four minutes after the break with a lovely free-kick from around 25-yards out.

The teams were back on level terms in the 66th minute when Pedro did well to control a long-ball from goalkeeper Sanchez before skipping past one challenge and calmly slotting past Aaron Ramsdale.

Newcastle responded with a triple change with 20 minutes to play as Anthony Elanga, Harvey Barnes and Yoanne Wissa replaced Jacob Murphy, Gordon and Woltemade to freshen up the attack.

Barnes should have won the game in the final 10 minutes with a glorious chance in the box, but the winger volleyed wide of the mark as the sides settled for a share of the spoils.
