With the FIFA Puskas award nominees for 2025 announced recently, there remains hope that Orlando Pirates midfielder Cemran Dansin could still make the crack, as former Leeds United defender Dylan Kerr compares the strike to one of the great volleys scored by Tony Yeboah.

FIFA announced last week the 11 nominees for the Goal of the Year (2025), with former Mamelodi Sundowns forward Lucas Ribeiro Costa among the contenders, for his solo effort for Masandawana against Borussia Dortmund at the Club World Cup.

Dansin had the football community in the country standing up and applauding his volleyed strike that went in off the crossbar for The Buccaneers against Mamelodi Sundowns in the Betway Premiership at the beginning of this month, with the Soweto giants supporters bringing up suggestions that the goal deserves a FIFA Puskas award nomination.

The 20-year-old could still be in consideration for the 2026 edition of the Puskas awards, should the selection panel be wowed by his strike, as the dates for the current selection were from 11 August last year up to 2 August 2025 (Dansin’s wonder strike was on 1 November, after the cut-off date for 2025).

“Ah listen, if that Pirates goal (by Dansin) doesn’t get (PSL) Goal of the Season, then there’s something wrong. That was some volley!” former Marumo Gallants head coach Kerr reacted, speaking to Soccer Laduma.

“He reminded me of Tony Yeboah’s strike for Leeds against Liverpool, when he smashed it and it came off the bar (and crossed the goal-line). That’s not luck, that was just timing.

“People say it’s luck when you do that, it’s not! It’s timing. He hit that perfectly. It’s all about timing. If that doesn’t win African Goal of the Year, then there must be a better goal because I don’t think I’ve seen it,” Kerr said.

The Siya crew quizzed the former Leeds defender on whether Dansin’s goal deserves a FIFA Puskas award nomination.

“100 percent, if Oscarine (Masuluke) can be nominated for his overhead kick (for Baroka against Pirates at the 2017 FIFA Puskas awards), you have to look at that goal (by Dansin), a strike like that it’s not about luck, it’s not about ability, it’s about timing,” Kerr responded.

“Being at the right area, at the right time and striking the ball with the right part of the foot, right on cue and it’s all on timing,” the 58-year-old coach insisted.
