Mamelodi Sundowns look set to make a late call on the availability of Denis Onyango, as he gave an update on Reyaad Pieterse and Jody February as well.

Onyango sustained an injury while on national team duty with Uganda, going down in the 65th minutes in the Cranes’ clash against Morocco on Tuesday. He is expected to return to Chloorkop on Friday, a day before Sundowns start their CAF Champions League group campaign against DRC St Eloi Lupopo.

Should Onyango not be fit to feature in the matchday squad, Cardoso has Pieterse and February who are eager to get into the team. February returned from injury recently

“Denis will arrive tomorrow (Friday), so the assessment on Denis will be made as soon as he arrives. We believe that the fact that he went down does not mean he is out of the match (against Lupopo), let’s wait and see. Sometimes these kind of head knocks or concussions have different levels. We need to assess which level he was involved in. We are in communication with the national team and tomorrow we want to see him and make him go through some tests,” Cardoso told media during a press conference held at Chloorkop on Thursday afternoon.

“We trust the other goalkeepers that we have. Reyaad is training very well. We had a match on the weekend that he played. Jody February just joined a couple of weeks ago with the training sessions, so we have options in case Denis cannot participate on the match.”

Sundowns will host Lupopo at Loftus Stadium on Saturday in their first Group C clash, looking to make a solid start. Al Hilal and MC Alger complete the group.
