The story
A former Golden Arrows and Maritzburg United (now Durban City) player has swapped his football boots for boxing gloves — and is already making waves in the ring.
The ex-DStv Diski Challenge striker Phikelelani Khumalo stopped Don Juan van Heerden with a first-round body jab at Emperors Palace during a GoldenGlovesSA tournament.
According to Radio 2000 journalist Thabiso Mosia, Khumalo left football in 2020 to pursue boxing, a decision that has paid off as he now holds both the SA and ABU Middleweight titles.
Known as “Stinger,” he celebrated his emphatic 1-minute-20-second knockout with a promotion from Rodney Berman’s Golden Gloves Management.
Following the fight, No Doubt Boxing Management shared Khumalo’s post-match reaction, where he emphasised that he’s feeling great despite feeling “cold.”
“I feel great, but I’m still cold. I wanted to punish him; I was thinking the fight would go into the 6th or 7th round. But you don’t get paid for overtime,” said Khumalo, whose victory not only earned him the ABU title but also marked his first successful defence of the SA Middleweight crown.
