Family loses goods worth SSP 24 million in Kuajok fire outbreak

KUAJOK – A family in Kuajok, the capital of Warrap State, has lost property estimated at over SSP 24 million after a fire broke out at their home on Monday, local authorities have confirmed.

James Kondok Madut, the Civil Defence Director in Kuajok, said the inferno started after a neighbour allegedly mishandled fire while clearing grass. The flames reportedly spread rapidly and engulfed the house, destroying household items, business goods and cash kept inside.

Madut described the incident as “a huge fire that was difficult to control,” adding that the building was consumed within a short time.

“The house contained mattresses, bedding, utensils, clothes for sale, bedsheets and a large amount of money estimated at SSP 24.7 million,” he said.

The official blamed the incident on negligence, saying residents continue to underestimate the risks associated with using fire in residential areas, particularly during the dry season.

“People think only children mishandle fire, yet adults also cause serious damage. Fire spreads quickly, especially when it reaches flammable materials such as diesel or fuel,” Madut said, noting that the Civil Defence lacks adequate firefighting equipment in the state.

Kuajok has recorded rising fire incidents in recent months. In a similar incident last month, about 14 shops were destroyed, leaving traders with heavy losses. Two boys were arrested in connection with that fire after admitting they lit flames to “clear a bad smell” inside a building.

The fire incident follows a devastating blaze that ravaged the Custom Market in Juba and left shop owners frustrated and uncertain about how to recover. Although authorities have promised support, many residents remain sceptical given the country’s ongoing political and security challenges.

Officials are urging the public to exercise extreme caution with fire as the dry season begins and winds become stronger, increasing the risk of rapid spread.
