A Premier League legend has strongly criticised Mohamed Salah’s decision to deliver his scathing interview.

The Egyptian forward could not hide his frustrations after his team’s disappointing 3-3 draw against Leeds at Elland Road this past weekend, as he remained a substitute for the second time in three league games.

He delivered a scathing post-match interview where he revealed that he does not know why he is being left out of games, adding that his relationship with manager Arne Slot does not exist, before claiming that someone within the club is trying to “throw him under the bus.”

The interview cast another negative light on Liverpool’s already disappointing 2025/26 season, and Wayne Rooney believes Salah went a step too far with his comments.

Speaking on his BBC Podcast, Rooney questioned why the 33-year-old decided to speak out at that point.

“Why would you come out and say that?” Rooney asked. “I think Mo Salah has been absolutely incredible for Liverpool and, as a player, he seems really quiet and keeps to himself,” he added.

“Last year, he was vocal about not being offered a new contract, and he does deserve the money he gets playing for Liverpool, but he can’t flip it and say what he did. It is incredible,” the ex-England star added.

Time catches up with all of us. He hasn’t looked at his best or sharpest this season. I have been quite vocal about that over the last couple of months, and clearly Arne Slot has seen that, and he’s put him on the bench,” Rooney continued.

“If I were one of his teammates, I wouldn’t be happy. This is when they need him the most, and if anything, he has thrown Liverpool under the bus. He is absolutely destroying his legacy at Liverpool,” the 40-year-old continued.

Liverpool.com reported further segments of Rooney’s podcast, and the Englishman suggested that Salah needs to find a solution to the problem.

“For me, he has to either speak to the manager, put something out and try and put it right, or he has to leave the club. It needs to be sorted quickly from either side,” he added.

He mentioned that it may be beneficial for all parties for Salah to go to AFCON and let the situation simmer down.

“He has done it for a reason. It is premeditated before he goes away with Egypt, and I think that will be a good thing to get him out of the way for Liverpool,” he said.
