Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, Khuliso Mudau, Teboho Mokoena, Brayan Leon and Khulumani Ndamane were recalled o the Brazilians’ starting line-up after the surprise defeat to TS Galaxy in the Nedbank Cup over the weekend.
Tsiki Ntsabeleng kept his spot in the Sundowns line-up and nearly repaid the faith after 11 minutes after collecting a pass in the box, but the attacker sent his effort wide of Darren Johnson’s upright.
The Brazilians continued to dominate as the first half went on and they went agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock after 20 minutes when Ndamane rose well to meet a corner, but his towering header forced Johnsonn into a fine save.
The visitors were then dealt a blow after the 30-minute mark as speedy winger Thapelo Morena was forced off with an injury and replaced by Nuno Santos, who surprisingly started on the bench.
Usuthu, meanwhile, had to wait until the latter stages of the first half to register a big effort at goal, with Thando Ngwenya pouncing on a golden chance in the box but the striker was denied by a superb save by goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, who ensured the sides go into the break all square.
