An Insider has poured cold water regarding rumours of Rulani Mokwena being shortlisted by Kaizer Chiefs
Insiders have played down speculation linking former Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena with a potential move to Kaizer Chiefs, while stopping short of completely ruling out the possibility.
Recent reports from local media have suggested that Mokwena is among the names considered if Amakhosi move to appoint a new head coach, but a source close to the club has told Soccer Laduma that such a scenario would be complicated, largely due to the coach’s strong historical ties to Orlando Pirates.
According to the insider, Mokwena’s background and associations make a move to Chiefs difficult to envisage at this stage.
“There’s no Rulani going to Chiefs. No, it will never happen. Even Rulani is not thinking about it. Rulani is a Pirate. Rulani’s team is Pirates. Even his father, they would disown him if you ask. Rulani will never come to Chiefs. It’s not even football. Rulani himself is not interested in that. He won’t take that. You see both sides,” the source told Soccer Laduma.
However, while the source was emphatic in their view, it is understood that Kaizer Chiefs are expected to review their coaching structure at the end of the season, with the club remaining open to assessing a wide pool of candidates as circumstances evolve and Rulani Mokwena could be one of them.
“Yeah, we have to look. But also this year it’s not as if there are too many coaches out there. I’m saying how things have happened over the last few years. You cannot be looking only at one or two. You don’t have to look at big names anymore. Because you see how Pirates have had success with lesser-known coaches,” the insider added.
For now, Chiefs continue under the guidance of co-coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze, both of whom were previously part of Nasreddine Nabi’s technical team.
While Mokwena’s name may not be at the forefront of discussions, the situation remains fluid, with Amakhosi expected to weigh up their options carefully before making any long-term decisions regarding the club’s next head coach.
