Japan will be psyched up

Assistant coach Jerry Flannery says the Springbok expect a fired-up Japan at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

Fresh off a narrow 19-15 loss to Australia in Tokyo, Japan have shown they can mix it with tier-one opposition – and Flannery says Eddie Jones’ men will arrive in London believing they can create another historic upset.

“Japan showed resilience in the first half despite the yellow cards, and they showed how well they can defend against one of the best sides,” said Flannery.

“Australia scored six tries against us in the first game in the Rugby Championship, so we are aware that Japan are not just a really good attacking side, they can defend really well too.

“In the last quarter they came back into the game, and they would be disappointed that they didn’t win.”

Flannery added that the Boks are under no illusion about what to expect when they face the Brave Blossoms under the Wembley arch.

“I’m expecting that Eddie will be building up his team all week and they’ll believe that they can win and rewrite history by beating the Boks at Wembley,” he said. “We need to ensure that we’re as well prepared as we can be.”

With five Tests in five weeks, Flannery admitted the schedule will push the world champions mentally and physically, but believes it’s exactly the type of test the squad needs.

“It’s a great challenge for us,” he said. “You face five different opponents from week to week, and that’s how the World Cup works as well. Your ability to stay mentally fresh and keep bringing energy all the time will be good for us.”
