It was an embarrassing defeat for the Harambee Stars as they lost 8-0 to Senegal in a friendly encounter in Turkey on Tuesday evening.

It was the biggest defeat of McCarthy’s career, and Kenya’s biggest loss since a 9-0 defeat to Zambia back in 1978.

Three goals from ex-Liverpool man Sadio Mane, two goals from Nicolas Jackson, and one each from Malick Diouf, Ibrahim Mbaye and Cherif Ndiaye helped inflict further pain on McCarthy and his side.

The loss has not gone down well with Kenyan officials and fans, and McCarthy has faced backlash for the result, particularly over his team selection.

Kenyan Football Federation (FKF) boss Hussein Mohammed took to X and admitted it was a “bad day in the office” and vowed to fix the issues at hand.

We have no excuses. I apologise for these results. We shall fix it. We will review our policies, operational procedures and key performance indicators of all staff starting from the grassroots and working our way to all National teams,” he wrote.

According to Pulse Sports Kenya, the 48-year-old was criticised for his team selection against a strong Senegal side, with the South African opting for an inexperienced side.

McCarthy was also criticised for sticking to his football principles, despite them not working. His insistence on playing out from the back, while also putting players in uncomfortable positions, contributed to the big loss.

Fans on social media also took issue with the ex-Cape Town City boss, with many calling for serious reconsideration over McCarthy’s future.
