Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has responded to the rumours linking him as a replacement for Xabi Alonso at Real Madrid.

The Spanish side parted ways with Alonso after a six-month stint that culminated with defeat to El Clásico rivals FC Barcelona in the Spanish Supercup.

Alonso was replaced by his former Liverpool and Real Madrid teammate Alvaro Arbeloa, who was in charge of Real Madrid Castilla.

Upon his announcement, Arbeloa was revealed as the new head coach of Los Blancos, indicating he has been put in charge as the permanent coach, despite continuous links with Klopp.

The German was previously linked with a move to Spain after he announced his departure from Liverpool, as well as when Carlo Ancelotti announced his departure in April 2025.

Speaking to Austrian streaming broadcaster ServusTV ON, Klopp was asked whether he had received any phone calls about the position, which the 58-year-old denied.

It actually has – though not from Madrid. But yes, there were definitely a few people who felt they had to contact me directly about it,” the former Borussia Dortmund boss said.

Red Bull’s Head of Global Soccer also said Alonso’s sacking indicated there might be deeper problems at the club.

First of all, I think it’s another sign that something isn’t quite right there at the moment,” Klopp said.

“If Xabi Alonso, who over the last two years in Leverkusen has shown what an outstanding coaching talent he is – and I think at his age and with the number of jobs he’s had, you can say that – is then forced to leave Madrid just six months later, it shows a few things,” he continued.

“On the one hand, it shows that nowadays there’s no time anymore. On the other, the expectations at Real Madrid are obviously enormous.”

“To make a decision like that in the heat of the moment, after losing a cup final to Barcelona yesterday, says a lot. I think we’d already been hearing rumours for a while,” the German added.
