Venue: Camp Nou
Ferran Torres started ahead of Robert Lewandowski in the attack, while Fermin Lopez also earned a recall in place of Frenkie de Jong, who was left out of the matchday squad.
Hansi Flick’s men dominated possession from the onset but they found it tough to break down the Yellow Submarine for the early parts of the first half.
The Catalan giants had to wait until the 28th minute for the opening goal after Lamine Yamal latched onto a pass from Lopez before firing into the bottom corner.
Barcelona managed to double their lead eight minutes before the halftime break, with Yamal completing his brace by skipping past two Villarreal defenders before curling the ball into the top corner.
Villarreal came out firing in the second half and managed to pull a goal back four minutes in Santiago Mourino knocked the ball into the path of Pape Gueye, who fired home from close range.
However, Barcelona restored their two-goal advantage with 20 minutes left on the clock as Yamal completed his hat-trick as he latched onto a pass from Pedri to go clear on goal and slot past Luiz Junior.
The goal was enough to seal victory for the defending champions, who went on to bag a fourth goal in second-half stoppage time thanks to Lewandowksi’s close-range finsih.
