Late Appollis Discomfort Draws Attention Ahead Of AFCON

Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana supporters can breathe a sigh of relief after national team coach Hugo Broos downplayed concerns over Oswin Appollis following the friendly win against Ghana.

The 24-year-old winger came on at half-time during Bafana Bafana’s 1-0 victory over the Black Stars in an Africa Cup of Nations warm-up match, but was seen limping at full-time, sparking concern ahead of the looming 2025 AFCON.

However, Broos was quick to reassure fans that the situation is not serious.

“It’s not so bad. He just got a kick on his leg, and maybe tomorrow he will have a little problem. But (it’s) okay, it’s nothing major,” Broos said during his post-match interview on television after the match.

Appollis has been one of Broos’ most trusted attacking options, offering pace, directness and work rate on the flanks, and the winger’s discomfort was understood to be the result of a knock rather than a serious injury concern.

With Bafana set to jet off to Morocco after completing their preparations for AFCON, the technical team will continue to monitor the Pirates winger over the coming days, although early indications suggest there is no major setback.

The Ghana encounter marked Bafana Bafana’s final friendly before the squad leaves Mzansi, with Broos now turning his full attention to final preparations ahead of the team’s opening group match next Monday against Angola.

With no further warm-up matches scheduled, the focus will shift to recovery, tactical work and ensuring all players are fit and ready for the continental showpiece.
