The story
The Buccaneers have come under some criticism from local supporters following their alleged mistreatment of Saint-Eloi Lupopo players before the CAF Champions League second preliminary round clash on Saturday.
Videos circulating on social media show chaotic scenes as Lupopo members clashed with security guards at Orlando Stadium, reportedly over accreditation issues upon entry.
The footage, which appears to show the Congolese-based players being manhandled, has sparked anger among non-Pirates fans, who criticised the video.
The unsavoury scenes set the stage for a dramatic afternoon, where Pirates suffered a gut-wrenching elimination from the competition. Despite nullifying Lupopo’s three-goal first-leg advantage with a 3-0 victory, thanks to a late strike from Oswin Appollis, the Buccaneers were not unable to finish the job in the penalty shootout.
Les Cheminots held their nerve, converting five of six penalties to win 5-4 and secure a place in the CAF Champions League group stage.
