Maj. Gen. Madut reports peaceful Christmas season in Western Equatoria

YAMBIO – Christmas 2025 was celebrated peacefully across Western Equatoria (WES), with State Police Commissioner, Maj. Gen. Philip Madut Tong, reporting a calm festive period marked by the absence of major crimes or security incidents.

Madut told journalists in Yambio on Friday that both urban and rural areas experienced a tranquil Christmas, attributing the calm to strengthened security patrols, early preparations by state leadership, and improved cooperation between communities and law enforcement.

“This Christmas season has passed without any killings, thefts, looting, or attacks on civilians,” Maj. Gen. Madut said. “From December 24 up to now, our police records show zero criminal cases — a first in recent memory for Western Equatoria State.”

According to the police commissioner, security forces were deployed in advance of the festivities, with routine patrols conducted across major towns, highways, and rural communities to deter criminal activity and ensure public safety.

A shift from years of insecurity

Western Equatoria State, like much of South Sudan, has endured years of insecurity following the outbreak of the national conflict in December 2013. The violence, which began as a political crisis, quickly escalated into widespread armed clashes and communal tensions, leaving many communities displaced and disrupting basic services.

For years, residents of WES faced recurring incidents of looting, road ambushes, and displacement, forcing families to flee their homes and undermining economic and social life. However, recent peace efforts — including local reconciliation initiatives, closer collaboration between security agencies and communities, and sustained dialogue among stakeholders — have contributed to improved stability.

Maj. Gen. Madut said the peaceful Christmas celebrations reflect growing public trust in security institutions and a collective commitment to peace.

“The people of Western Equatoria have shown remarkable restraint and unity,” he said. “Their willingness to work with security forces, traditional leaders, and local authorities helped ensure that this festive season remained peaceful for everyone.”

Vigilance to continue

Police officials said security patrols and monitoring will continue through the end-of-year celebrations and into the New Year. The public was urged to remain vigilant, respect the law, and report any suspicious activities to authorities.

Residents in Yambio and surrounding counties welcomed the calm atmosphere, describing the celebrations as a rare moment of relief after years of uncertainty.

“This is the first Christmas in a long time that we truly felt safe,” said a community leader in Yambio. “Families celebrated freely, and we pray that this peace continues into the New Year and beyond.”
