AWEIL – A 26-year-old man killed his elder brother over a family dispute on Thursday night in Maper-Agor boma, Madhol payam of Aweil East County, Northern Bahr El Ghazal state, police said.
Daniel Aluat Yak, police inspector of Madhol Payam, told this outlet on Sunday that the incident occurred when the suspect, 26-year-old Ayii Lual Thor, intervened when his 30-year-old brother, Ayiik Lual Thor, reportedly intoxicated, began threatening their sister and mother at home around 8:00 PM.
Yak explained that Ayii Lual Thor approached him, urging him not to engage in fighting, but his brother chose to fight, which ultimately led to his death.
“What happened is that the elder brother, in his 30s, identified as Ayiik Lual Thor, returned home while drunk and started fighting people. When the brother was tipped off about the problem, his brother began to intervene and started to fight him, and he died eventually,” Yak said.
He said that the incident was chaotic and the investigations revealed that the deceased was returning home under the influence of alcohol and began to threaten his sister and mother, which led to a fight that resulted in his death.
“Results showed that the rib might have entered in his lung as he was seriously injured in the heart as he was breathing well.”
Officer Yak stated that the victim has been laid to rest, while his brother is in custody and will be charged under the penal code of South Sudan’s Police Code of 2006.
He stated that the suspect will be arraigned in court to face charges regarding the murder of his brother.
He encouraged the community to resolve local disputes through family meetings.
He also emphasized the importance of using local chiefs to mediate conflicts or seeking legal action against those responsible, rather than resorting to violence.
