MSF vaccinates 40,000 against cholera in Duk County

BOR – Medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has completed an emergency oral cholera vaccination campaign and reached 40,000 people in Duk County of Jonglei State following an outbreak declared by the Ministry of Health in early February 2026.

The campaign, which concluded on February 28, 2026, was conducted in coordination with the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO).

“Vaccination is one of the key tools to reduce cholera-related morbidity and mortality, alongside case management, water and sanitation activities, and community engagement,” MSF said.

The vaccination drive targeted local and displaced populations aged one year and above in Padiet and Poktap communities along the canal, as well as surrounding island areas where access to healthcare remains limited, and the risk of transmission is high.

“The campaign aims to vaccinate local and displaced populations aged one year and above in Padiet, Poktap communities along the canal, and surrounding island areas,” MSF stated.

Since the beginning of 2026, cholera cases have continued to be reported in Duk County. As of 2 March 2026, a total of 844 suspected cholera cases defined as medically attended acute watery diarrhoea had been identified in Ministry of Health and MSF-supported health facilities.

“Since MSF began supporting health facilities in Duk on 8 February 2026, 709 suspected cholera cases have accessed care in MSF-supported locations,” the organisation said.

The majority of cases have been reported from Padiet and Ageer Payams, particularly in flood-affected and hard-to-reach fishing communities along the Jonglei Canal.

MSF’s vaccination activities included four fixed vaccination sites in Padiet and Poktap, two mobile vaccination teams operating along the canal, and four outreach teams reaching island and other hard-to-reach communities.

“MSF continues to work with the Ministry of Health and partners to respond to the cholera outbreak, and support affected communities in Duk County,” the organisation said.
