The Team of Choice made just one change from their win over Sekhukhune United on Wednesday, as Haashim Domingo dropped to the bench as Athini Jodwana was granted a starting berth.

The home side dominated possession in the early stages of the encounter but it was City who carved the game’s first opening when Terrence Mashego did well to pick out Maseko, who sent his header straight at goalkeeper Edward Maova.

While Arrows struggled to make their possession count, City grew stronger as the first half continued but they were let down by their decision-making in the final third despite getting in some good positions down both flanks. However, that all changed ten minutes before the break when defender Fezile Gcaba pounced on a low cross from Saziso Magawana before controlling well and firing into the back of the net.

The visitors carried that momentum into the second half and were unlucky not to have doubled their lead five minutes when Magawana did well to pick out find Maseko in the box, however the attacker dragged his effort just wide of the upright.

Arrows managed to get back on level terms just before the hour mark when substitute Thokozani Khumalo got the equaliser a minute after coming on with a lovely header from close range. City were then dealt a blow with a 12 minutes left in the second period as they were reduced to ten players after Jodwana was given his marching orders after picking up his second yellow card of the contest.

Neither side were able to find the breakthrough in the latter stages of the second half, forcing the encounter to another 30 minutes of extra-time, but Arrows were unable to assert their dominance despite boasting the numerical advantage.

Penalties would be needed to settle the contest and for the third Nedbank Cup game in a row, City managed to triumph in the shoot-out and book their spot in the semi-final.
