Nzara County officials dismiss reports of 10 civilians abducted by rebels

YAMBIO — Local authorities in Nzara County of Western Equatoria State have dismissed reports alleging that 10 civilians were abducted by rebel forces, describing the claims as unverified and misleading.

The allegations emerged after residents reported that unidentified armed men rounded up civilians in Bureagbunru on Wednesday, 11 February, sparking fear among communities in the area.

Daniel Bazia, Nzara County Executive Director, told Sudans Post on Friday that preliminary investigations conducted by security agencies found no evidence to support assertions that a group of civilians had been kidnapped by armed elements.

“We have not received any confirmed report indicating that 10 civilians were arrested or abducted. People should avoid spreading rumors that may cause panic,” Bazia said.

Bazia noted that they are continuing to monitor the situation and remain in contact with community leaders to establish the facts.

He acknowledged a 31-armed group, reportedly well-armed, had been sighted in parts of the county, creating anxiety among residents, but authorities have not identified the group or its affiliation.

Western Equatoria State Police Commissioner Major General Samuel Tet Machar said the suspected rebels were reported in the Buremaku and Bureagbunru areas, prompting the deployment of security forces on Wednesday.

According to him, the forces did not encounter the armed group during the operation.

“No abduction has been confirmed, but one person from the area is missing, and we are following up on the incident. The public should remain calm and avoid panic movements,” he said.

Machar added that the general security situation remains calm, noting that authorities will continue monitoring developments closely, especially during the ongoing farming season when many residents travel to distant fields.

Community sources claimed civilians were rounded up by armed men, but independent verification of the claims was not immediately possible.

Local officials urged residents to report any security threats through formal channels and reassured the public of their commitment to protecting civilians and maintaining stability in Nzara County.
