The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Governor Dr John Mushayavanhu unveiled the ‘Big 5 ZiG Banknotes Series’, featuring denominations of ZiG10, ZiG20, and ZiG50 initially, with ZiG100 and ZiG200 notes expected at a later stage. The governor also stated that the central bank is reissuing ZiG coins to address shortages of small change. The move is aimed at preventing artificial price increases that occur when businesses round up costs due to a lack of smaller denominations.

Currency Modernisation Efforts

The new notes will circulate alongside existing notes, allowing a gradual transition as part of broader efforts to modernise the country’s currency system.

The central bank hopes that the redesigned notes will improve security features, ease transactions, and support economic confidence.

Public Reactions

Zimbabweans have expressed a range of opinions on social media and public forums. Some welcomed the redesign, praising the inclusion of national symbols and improved security features, while others questioned whether the new notes would address broader economic challenges, such as inflation and cash shortages.
