Pirates Could Reopen Earlier Negotiations This January

Orlando Pirates could be set to revisit their search for a striker when the January transfer window opens, with indications that the club may look to reinforce their attacking department despite having added new options this season.

The Soweto giants came close to landing New Zealand international Andre de Jong during the previous window, following reported negotiations with Stellenbosch FC in September.

However, the deal collapsed at the death as the Cape Winelands outfit could not secure a replacement before the deadline, according to sources.

It is understood that it was the second time the Buccaneers had tried to lure the striker to Orlando, after a late attempt in July also fell through.

At that point, Pirates had already recruited Yanela Mbuthuma, joining an attacking line featuring Tshegofatso Mabasa, Evidence Makgopa and Boitumelo Radiopane.

Since then, Mbuthuma, Makgopa and Mabasa have all shown their value when utilised, but uncertainty around Mabasa’s long-term situation has raised fresh questions about the club’s depth.

With the experienced forward seemingly having lost his place despite scoring important goals when selected, Pirates may find themselves needing another proven finisher to complement the current group.

Compounding the situation is the mysterious disappearance of Radiopane, who has fallen completely out of the picture after showing promise early under new coach Abdeslam Ouaddou.

His lack of involvement has left the Buccaneers with just two established forwards and one still adapting to topflight demands.

The club’s behind-the-scenes movements suggest that the technical team has remained active in the market.

Earlier this year, Zambian striker Andrew Phiri was assessed by Pirates, signalling that the Buccaneers have continued to monitor potential additions up front as part of their long-term planning.

And while new signings such as Mbuthuma, Tshepang Moremi and Oswin Appollis have contributed goals and creativity, insiders believe the door remains open for further reinforcements.

With a long season ahead – and the team needing reliable firepower in all competitions – the expectation is that Pirates will explore the market once again in January.

As speculation intensifies, attention will turn to whether Pirates revive their pursuit of De Jong or shift focus toward fresh targets as they aim to sharpen their attack for the decisive months of the campaign.
