Los Blancos came into the clash four points adrift of FC Barcelona, who defeated Real Betis 5-3 on Saturday evening.

Xabi Alonso’s charges looked for the early goal but they had to wait until the 16th minute for the first opening as Jude Bellingham saw his close-range header brilliantly tipped away by goalkeeper Ionuț Radu.

The hosts, however, were forced into a change on 24 minutes when defender Eder Militao picked up an injury, with Antonio Rudiger brought on to join Raul Asencio in the middle of the defence.

Celta nearly silenced the home crowd with five minutes left in the first half when Pablo Duran raced clear on goal from a neat through-ball, however the striker was denied by a fine save from goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

The opening goal did arrive eight minutes after the break when Celta’s Williot Swedberg bagged his first goal of the season with a wonderful flicked finish after being picked out by Bryan Zaragoza.

The situation got worse for Madrid on 65 minute when they were reduced to ten players after Fran Garcia was sent off after picking up two yellow cards in the space of two minutes.

Despite being a man down, Los Blancos should have levelled matters ten minutes later when Rudiger’s long ball sent Kylian Mbappe through on goal, but the Frenchman’s attempted lob sailed onto the roof of the net with only Radu to beat.

The hosts would go on to end the game with nine players as Álvaro Carreras was given marching orders in second-half stoppage time, before Celta grabbed a second goal a minute later when Swedberg completed his brace with another calm finish.
