Steve Barker’s difficult start to life in Tanzania seems to be behind him as the South African helped lead Simba to a fourth successive victory.
The latest win came against Tanzania Prisons, with former Mamelodi Sundowns star Rushine De Reuck scoring the winner from the spot to push the Reds of Msimbazi up to fourth with 22 points from nine games, seven points fewer than league leaders JKT Tanzania.
Speaking after the game, De Reuck explained the importance of the victory and getting on the scoresheet.
“[It was] a difficult game today for us, I think the pitch didn’t allow us to play the way we wanted to, but as you can see, we really tried to stick to our identity,” he explained.
“I’m proud of the boys. Tanzania Prisons are very difficult for us, and we’re happy to secure the three points,” he added.
Speaking on his goal, De Reuck explained that the defence also had a role to help the attackers to get goals.
“It is important for defenders to score goals, it’s not only the responsibility of the attackers, so I’m happy with my contribution so far, but I’m just happy that the team won. I can only be happy if the team wins and I am happy with my contribution,” he concluded.
Barker was also happy with the way his team controlled the game, and despite wanting more, he was happy to take the three points.
“It was a good 90 minutes, we maintained control of the game from the start to the end, I thought we moved the ball really well, we had good chances, especially in the first half,” Barker said.
“We asked a lot of questions in the first half, and we deserved to go into the lead at half-time, and the second half was just a matter of controlling the situation, and not making any silly errors,” the 58-year-old added.
“We should have done more and got the third goal to kill the game off, but we were in control and put in a very solid performance,” he concluded.
