BOR – The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement–In Opposition (SPLM-IO) has issued a fresh 72-hour evacuation warning to civilians and humanitarian organizations operating in several parts of Jonglei State, citing the risk of imminent military confrontations near key locations.

In a statement released on Monday, SPLM-IO spokesperson and Chairperson of the National Committee for Information and Communication, Pal Mai Deng, urged civilians and aid workers to immediately vacate areas close to military installations to avoid being caught in potential clashes. The warning specifically covers Jonglei State capital Bor, as well as Gaatdiang, Ayod, Poktap, and surrounding areas.

“Civilians in these areas must leave immediately,” Pal said. “We strongly advise against joining or associating with the SSPDF forces in the upcoming military confrontations, as this will put your lives at great risk.”

Mai, who served as the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation in Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity, said the evacuation notice is intended to minimize civilian casualties and protect humanitarian personnel working in volatile zones. He emphasized that the 72-hour window provides an opportunity for residents and aid agencies to relocate to safer areas before any military operations take place.

The SPLM-IO statement also addressed members of the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF), urging them to reconsider their positions. According to Pal, SSPDF soldiers who feel aggrieved by the current leadership should either vacate their barracks peacefully or defect to the SPLA-IO forces to avoid further destruction.

“We call on SSPDF soldiers, whose families and dignity have been harmed by the regime, to peacefully leave their barracks or defect to SPLA-IO forces on the battlefield,” Pal said. “Compliance will minimize destruction and help save lives.”

He added that adherence to the evacuation warning would significantly reduce damage to civilian infrastructure and prevent loss of life during any planned operations.

Humanitarian organizations and local residents in Jonglei State now face urgent decisions as tensions continue to rise.

As of publication, local authorities, the SSPDF, and humanitarian agencies had not issued an official response regarding evacuation arrangements, security guarantees, or assistance for displaced populations.
