Springboks Suffer Major Blow as Ox Nche Ruled Out for the Rest of the Season
The Springboks have suffered a major setback after star loosehead prop Ox Nche was ruled out for the remainder of the international season due to injury.
The 29-year-old sustained the knock during South Africa’s emphatic 61–7 win over Japan at Wembley Stadium.

Injury Ends Nche’s Season Early
According to Planet Rugby, Nche was forced off the field in the opening 20 minutes after a collision with Japan captain Warner Dearns. He was replaced by Gerhard Steenekamp, who went on to play over an hour and impressed in the scrums.
Head coach Rassie Erasmus confirmed after the match that Nche’s tour was over, describing the injury as “serious.”
“It’s serious, I don’t think he will play for the rest of the tour.
“Unfortunately, in the tackle situation, he hurt his ankle and knees – he is on crutches, and I don’t think we will have him for the rest of the tour,” Erasmus said.
Steenekamp Steps Up in Return
The match also marked Steenekamp’s first appearance for the Springboks this year after recovering from injury. His return comes at a crucial time, helping to ease a potential front-row crisis following Nche’s setback.
Earlier this year, Boan Venter made his Test debut in Steenekamp’s absence and could be called upon again as South Africa reshuffles its pack for the remainder of the tour.
Possible Reinforcements on the Way
Erasmus hinted that Asenathi Ntlabakanye might be drafted in as injury cover, while Thomas du Toit could be asked to switch between tighthead and loosehead roles.
“We’ve got Boan Venter and Gerhard Steenekamp, who played really well. Then Thomas du Toit is back, and we have Wilco Louw and Zach Portherin.
“If another loosehead goes down, we’re in trouble. We’ll probably bring in Asenathi Ntlabakanye, but I still need to talk to the selectors,” said Erasmus.
Boks Face Front-Row Depth Test
Nche’s absence is a significant blow to the world champions, known for their dominant scrummaging.
With key fixtures still ahead, Erasmus and his coaching staff will have to manage their resources carefully to maintain the Springboks’ physical edge up front.
