Sudanese man survives suicide attempt after jumping off telecom tower in Wanyjok

AWEIL – A Sudanese man in his early thirties survived an apparent suicide attempt on Friday evening after jumping from a telecommunications tower in Wanyjok Town in Aweil East County of South Sudan’s Northern Bahr el Ghazal State.

Residents said the incident occurred at around 6:00 p.m. at a Zain network mast located a short distance from the town’s main market. Witnesses reported that the man climbed the tower before jumping down. He sustained serious injuries, particularly to his hips and other parts of his body, but remained alive as residents rushed to assist him and seek medical attention.

Local eyewitness Ngong John said the scene quickly attracted a large crowd due to the tower’s proximity to the busy market centre.

“People were shocked because the tower is near the market. Many rushed to see what had happened,” he said.

Sudanese traders in Wanyjok identified the victim as Muhammud Adam, believed to be in his 30s. According to community members, he recently arrived from Sudan and had been staying among traders in the town.

Ngong said traders who knew the man expressed deep sympathy, stating they would have offered support if they had been aware of his struggles.

“They said if he had shared his problems earlier, they would have helped him. They showed real concern and humanity,” he added.

Another resident, Mary Achan, who works at a restaurant near Sudanese-owned shops, confirmed the incident and said some traders described the man as previously well-off in Sudan before losing his possessions due to the ongoing conflict.

“Those who know him said he lived a good life back home, but he lost everything and became stressed,” she said.

The incident has sparked local discussion about the psychological strain faced by people displaced by war and economic hardship. Community leaders and local observers urged individuals experiencing distress to seek support from family, friends, or psychosocial service providers.

Authorities had not released an official statement on the incident by the time of publication.
