Tough Thursday in Melbourne as Kgothatso Montjane bows out of Australian Open

Kgothatso Montjane exited the Australian Open after two consecutive defeats in Melbourne, Victoria, in Australia, on Thursday, 29 January 2026.

First, Montjane faced a challenging wheelchair singles match, remaining competitive in the first set against Ziyang Wang, reaching 4-all, before Wang broke her serve to claim the set.

The second set was an uphill battle for Montjane, who was 4-0 down at one stage, before she managed to win back-to-back games, but it was a little too late, and she had to succumb to a 6-4, 6-2 defeat to the tournament fourth seed.

The para athlete’s quarterfinals doubles match presented further woes when she and partner Manami Tanaka went up against no.1 seeded Xiaohui Li paired with Ziying Wang.

The Chinese duo commanded the match from start to finish, giving little for Montjane and Manami to take advantage of, and comfortably won the match in two sets 6-2; 6-3.
