Why Chiefs Are Not Rushing Into Contract Renewals

Thabang Rooi speaks on Kaizer Chiefs delay in securing contract extensions

With several Kaizer Chiefs players approaching the final months of their contracts, former Amakhosi defender Thabang Rooi has offered insight into why the Naturena-based club often delays announcing renewals.

With several Kaizer Chiefs first-team regulars approaching the final six months of their contracts, the club’s silence on renewals has raised eyebrows among supporters as the January window progresses.

A number of key players are believed to be nearing the end of their current deals in June, including goalkeepers Bruce Bvuma and Brandon Petersen, defenders Dillan Solomons and Sibongiseni Mthethwa, midfielder Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, and attacker Gaston Sirino, among others.

However, former Amakhosi defender Thabang Rooi has offered insight into why the club may not be rushing into contract announcements.

Speaking exclusively to Soccer Laduma, the Vanderbijlpark-based football figure suggested that Kaizer Chiefs are likely protected by option clauses in many of the players’ contracts, allowing the club to extend their stay without immediate renegotiation.

“I don’t know if things have change at Chiefs or what but during our time Chiefs had option for most of us. Maybe the have options for most of those players. We used to sign two-season and two or one year option,” Rooi told Soccer Laduma.

Rooi believes this contractual structure could still be in place, giving the club flexibility as they assess their squad and broader plans.

“I think that’s the case and hoping to sign other players and loan some or sell. I think most of the players deserve to be kept until Chiefs sort out the coaching staff,” he added.

With Kaizer Chiefs set to resume their 2026 campaign against Golden Arrows on 20 January at FNB Stadium, supporters will be eager for clarity on the futures of several senior players as the club looks to stabilise both on and off the pitch.
