The upcoming international break could mark the first time 27-year-old Luca Zidane plays senior international football, should head coach Vladmir Petkovic hand him his debut. Like his father, Luca was born in the French city of Marseille, but having only represented France at youth level, a senior call-up for Les Bleus never materialised.

Late last month, he confirmed his decision to represent the Desert Foxes, a switch he was eligible to make through his Algerian grandparents. His arrival in the nation’s capital, Algiers, reportedly drew huge crowds at Houari Boumediene Airport, with fans eager to welcome the son of the 1998 Ballon d’Or winner.

The excitement appears to be mutual, with the former Real Madrid goalkeeper expressing his pride at joining the two-time Africa Cup of Nations winners.

“I’m happy to be in Algeria, it’s an honour to be here for my first call-up. We hope to win the next match to qualify for the World Cup,” the shot-stopper told the Algerian Football Federation’s official media channel, as per Africasoccer.com.

“It’s an important match, and we hope the people from Algeria will support us.”

Zidane is currently playing in LaLiga 2 with Granada, where he has featured in seven of their eight league matches this season. However, it remains to be seen whether Petkovic will immediately entrust him with the gloves in Algeria’s upcoming fixtures.
